Mr. Moderator, members of the Central Committee!
I stand before you and before God as we are seeking to discern God’s will on the leadership of the World Council of Churches. I stand here because I feel a compelling call of the Triune God to commit myself to the World Council at this critical juncture of the ecumenical journey. I stand here because my church, and churches and people around the world feel that the experience I have gained through my ecumenical ministry over last 15 years in this centre should be put at the service of the World Council.

The World Council of Churches’ search committee for a general secretary met 23-26 June 2009 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The committee was elected by the Central Committee in February 2008 and led by the moderator, Dr Agnes Abuom.

In an address at the closing ceremony for the launch of the Oikotree movement in the Philippines in December 2008, theologian Park Seong-Won warned that time is running out on the ecological clock. Park declared this is the moment to move from talking to action to halt destruction of the earth’s natural environment.

In Chinese classic, there is a word saying "Be rich, you won't be humane (jen); be humane, you won't be rich." If we rephrase this for a spiritual connotation, this word can be said as follows: "Be rich, you won't be spiritual; be spiritual, you won't be rich." This would mean that there would be a fundamental difficulty in connecting the state of being rich and the condition of being authentically humane, or being rich and being truly spiritual.
